Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene

This course is for you if you are a safety, health and/or environmental professional or manager with industrial hygiene responsibilities but limited training or experience in this area. It's based on the National Safety Council's Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene technical manual. This course will help you develop an understanding of industrial hygiene principles and practices by examining four key processes - anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control. It is part of the Advanced Safety Certificate series.

Prerequisites: NONE
Who should attend: Gain a working knowledge of industrial hygiene. This course is for you if you are a safety, health and/or environmental professional or manager with industrial hygiene responsibilities but limited training or experience in this area. You'll develop an understanding of industrial hygiene principles and practices by examining four key processes - anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control. You'll also learn when to bring in the help of a qualified/certified industrial hygienist.

Objective: The course focuses on industrial hygiene hazards and controls in general industry. Topics include:
  • Anatomy, physiology and toxicology
  • Chemical hazards (liquids, gases, vapors and particulates)
  • Physical hazards (noise, radiation and thermal stress)
  • Ergonomics
  • Biological hazards
  • Walkthrough surveys
  • Air sampling techniques
  • Noise measurement
  • Ventilation and other engineering controls
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Respiratory protection
  • Safety and health programs/agencies
  • Government standards and voluntary guidelines
You'll participate in a variety of interactive learning activities led by experienced facilitators. Activities include equipment demonstrations and hands-on practice, and development of plans for your facility.

This course will be taught by Tim Neubauer, CSP.

Continuing Education Units:
Earn 2.6 CEUs (Continuance of Certification points from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals).

Tim Neubauer, CSP    
Consultant
Tim is the President of Evolution Safety Resources. As a safety professional with over 17 years of field experience, Tim started out as a laborer and thus has a unique view of hazards and solutions to overcome them. He is a former Senior Consultant for the National Safety Council and spent four years at the national/international level. Tim has been a Safety Coordinator, Safety Manager, Safety Trainer, and a Safety Director for several different companies. He has been a Safety Consultant and Instructor for the Safety and Health Council of NC for more than eight years and has worked in both general industry and construction environments.

Tim is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) who specialized in the construction health and safety field. He has achieved the Manager of Environmental Safety and Health (MESH) and a CMESH designation. Tim is also an Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC) Instructor for the National Safety Council in addition to being a trainer for the OSHA Outreach Training Institute in several regions. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) as well as the former Chairman of the Safety Committee for the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA).
