Todd Albertson

Senior Trooper Todd Albertson is a National Safety Council certified Alive at 25 instructor. He has been instructing Alive at 25 since 2007. He has been a State Trooper with the South Dakota Highway Patrol for nine years. Talking to and educating the youth of South Dakota is one of his passions because they are the future. Trooper Albertson has been giving safety presentations to groups of all ages on a wide variety of topics throughout his career with the Highway Patrol.

Jeffrey is the Corporate Safety Director for TEC Corp / Thompson Electric Company - Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota. Jeff has been working in the construction and electrical industry for 30 years, and is an experienced trainer specializing in Electrical Safety and Arc Flash. His training programs are informative and based upon real world experiences. Jeff currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Iowa Illinois Safety Council, and the NECA Safety Council in Nebraska.

Shawn Burress

With over 25 years’ experience in the hazardous materials and emergency response industries, Shawn is uniquely qualified to lead Burress Advisory Group. He brings a wealth of education and experience into both the classroom and field training. Our instructors/consultants have national and international training experience as well as extensive field experience. Our staff members have performed training and emergency response work in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America as well as in all 50 States. Each of our instructors currently engage in emergency response field-work as firefighters, emergency medical technicians, hazardous materials technicians/specialists, or specialize in confined space or high angle rescue situations. Ms. Dankert is a safety professional with 30 years of diversified experience covering the electronics, food, pharmaceutical, chemical and distribution industries. With responsibilities spanning the safety, health and environmental fields, Ms. Dankert functioned as a results-oriented manager who designed and implemented cost effective solutions to the safety and health challenges business and industry face on a daily basis. Her background in ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards has positioned her to help businesses integrate safety, health and environmental practices into their operations.

As Senior Consultant at the National Safety Council, Ms. Dankert is responsible for providing field consulting, auditing and training services geared towards solving a variety of safety and health challenges. Ms. Dankert has hands-on experience in providing industrial hygiene and ergonomic audits, compliance and safety management system assessments, training, program development and plan implementation to the shop floor. She is an OSHA General Industry and Construction Outreach Trainer with the National Safety Education Center.


Chanda Derby

Trooper Chanda Derby is a National Safety Council certified Alive at 25 instructor. She has been instructing Alive at 25 for six years. She has been a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of South Dakota for nine years. She has a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice and psychology. Chanda has been giving safety presentations to various groups covering a wide variety of topics throughout her career. Trooper Derby enjoys teaching young adults the importance of making safe driving choices.

Jan Fedora

Jan Fedora has worked with the Minnesota Safety Council for over 20 years as an Occupational Safety and Health Consultant. She has also served on the Panel of Advisors, Governor’s Awards Committee, taught at the Minnesota Safety & Health Conference, and conducted training with companies throughout Minnesota on OSHA standards, ergonomics, bloodborne pathogens, management skills, and HR issues, among others. Jan has a business degree from Augsburg College and a Secondary Teaching Certificate from Dakota County Technical College.

Angelica Grindle, Ph.D.

Dr. Angelica Grindle Senior Vice President, Quality Safety Edge, a pioneer in behavior-based safety with more than 25 years of proven results. She specializes in the application of employee-driven safety and quality improvements. Dr. Grindle has successfully designed, implemented and evaluated behavioral and process improvement systems in a wide variety of settings with large, medium and small organizations. She focuses on behavioral approaches to workplace safety that make sure initiatives align with key processes, that they are customized to include all needed support tools, and that they get buy-in from key stakeholders to get seamless implementation and long-term success. Dr. Grindle is the co-developer of the BBS Essentials workshops designed for small and medium-sized organizations interested in implementing behavior-based safety and a limited budget.

She is a regular speaker at international forums including workshops and presentations at the annual Behavioral Safety Now conference. She has spoken at the Minnesota Safety & Health Conference, and at the South Dakota Safety & Health Conference – receiving high marks for her expertise as well as her practical approach to behavior-based safety.

Gary Gruman

Trooper Gary Gruman is a National Safety Council certified Alive at 25 instructor. He has been instructing Alive at 25 for six years. He has been a South Dakota State Trooper for thirteen years and is stationed in Watertown, SD with his wife, Megan. Education through safety talks for young adults is a priority for Trooper Gruman.

Jim is a National Safety Council certified Defensive Driving Instructor. He has a bachelor's degree in Political Science and History and a Master's Degree in Public School Administration. He has thirty four years of experience as a classroom teacher and secondary school administrator. He has been teaching defensive driving classes in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and North Dakota for 20 years.

LeRoy is a National Safety Council certified Defensive Driving Instructor. He graduated from Cenex Managerial School where his 39 years of experience in the oil and fertilizer business helped develop his communication skills and his ability to work well with all age groups. Having earned accolades in safety instilled the need for a lifelong commitment to safety. He enjoys teaching defensive driving and influencing large groups of all ages in improving their driving skills. He has been teaching defensive driving classes in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and North Dakota for 20 years.

Melanie Mornard

Melanie Mornard has been a First Aid/CPR instructor with the South Dakota Safety Council since 1993, and an Instructor Development trainer since 1998. She is a Licensed Safety Professional and Certified Safety Trainer through the National Association of Safety Professionals with twelve years experience as a safety manager. Melanie was given the Commander's Award for Public Service; Department of the Army, and the 2004 Exceptional Volunteer Service; American Red Cross for excellence in teaching and consistently outstanding evaluations.

Stefan V. Salmonson, is the president of PROtective Services, Inc. He is a licensed deputy sheriff/tactical trainer, licensed private detective, licensed protective agent, certified personal protection specialist (Body Guard), international security consultant, experienced weapons and operational specialist, contract government investigator (with security clearance), airline transport pilot and professional speaker. PROS provides executive and personal protection services, high-risk employment termination support services, discrete investigations, security presentations, training, keynote presentations, security assessments, consulting and risk management recommendations for several hundred clients.

Stefan writes security related articles for publications and is frequently interviewed by journalists regarding security concerns. Clients include national/international corporations, government agencies, foreign royalty, public utilities, school districts/student transportation, flight department/associations, prisons, hospitals, financial institutions, media, the trucking, real estate and insurance industry.

Bill Schreiner

Bill is the commercial vehicle consultant for the Minnesota Safety Council. He has 25 years experience in commercial vehicle safety, is Haz-Mat certified and has been an instructor for the International Union of Operating Engineers/Local 49. In addition he owns a small interstate trucking company.

Matthew Stein, MS, CIH

Matt is president of Stein Safety and Health Services, LLC. He is a certified industrial hygienist with more than 15 years experience in a variety of settings, including government and private sector consulting. He spent approximately ten years working for OSHA. For approximately half of his time working for OSHA he worked as a contractor to their National Office, and was a compliance safety and health officer (CSHO) for the other half. While working as a contractor to National Office, Matt wrote several guidance documents and software packages that were distributed to the public on OSHA’s website. He also conducted more than 250 inspections as a CSHO. In both training and consulting, the stress is that compliance is not the end goal, but when implemented correctly safety and health adds value and minimizes risks to businesses and lives. He earned a Master of Science degree in industrial hygiene from the University of Iowa and is working on a Ph.D. on the same topic at the University of Minnesota.

Amber has an Associate's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University as well as two Bachelor of Science degrees from South Dakota State University (Agriculture/Animal Science and Biological Science). She is an OSHA Authorized General Industry Trainer and has a certificate in Safety Inspection Techniques from the OSHA Training Institute in San Diego. Amber has also earned the South Dakota Workplace Safety Certificate and the National Safety Council's Advanced Safety Certificate. Shes also a certified First Aid/ CPR/AED Instructor. Amber's hands-on experience includes 10 years as a health, safety, security and environmental manager.


Desmond Watson

Sergeant Desmond Watson is a National Safety Council certified Alive at 25 instructor. He has been instructing Alive at 25 for six years. He has been a State Trooper with the South Dakota Highway Patrol for nine years. He has a bachelor's degree in business management and an associate's degree in electronic systems technology. Sergeant Watson has been giving safety presentations to groups of all ages on a wide variety of topics throughout his career with the Highway Patrol.

Mike has been working with electric utility safety for the past 26 years, and is an active member of the American Public Power Association and past Safety committee chair. Mike is also an active member of the "IEEE" Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a member of the Federal & Minnesota OSHA Electric Task Force committees.
